Ice Cream Sundae Solidarity!

and Collaborative Making with Fiber/Thread/Plastic

Saturday July 19, 12-4pm

Come early if you want Ice Cream!

We will start the day with Community Ice Cream Sundaes!
"Sundae Solidarity" by Katrina Slavik

As the Trump presidency amplifies xenophobia, isolationism, and trade wars, it’s important to remember just how connected we are to the rest of the world. Nearly everything Americans consume has elements that originated somewhere else. Take an ice cream sundae, for instance, a quintessentially American desert. Where do the ingredients originate? Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of sugar. For peanuts, look to India. For chocolate: Ghana and Germany.

During “Sundae Solidarity”,  participants can make their own sundae with a variety of delicious foreign toppings. There will be Vietnamese coconut cookies, Asian tapioca balls, Egyptian dukkah, Dutch stroopwafels, and more. Three hand-painted posters will hang nearby. They illustrate international connectivity through global trade in contrast to MAGA bully tactics in an “America-first” trade war that is waged against countries whose economies are entangled with ours. One poster imagines a localized mini-economy as an idealistic alternative to globalized monopoly systems. The posters poke fun at the absurdity of economic and racist fearmongering and are uplifting and genuine as they imagine alternative economies that empower people rather than divide them.

Carol Paik:

How far can you reach? Come find out! We'll map out your wingspan, creating a shape that represents the space you occupy in the world. We'll fill the outline of your reach with lines of string, an exercise that will encourage you to use your whole body. We will overlap the shapes created by participants, ultimately forming a composite picture of our community.

Natalya Khorover:
Butterfly Effect: Small Actions, Big Impacts

Butterflies symbolize transformation, freedom, and hope. Their life cycle - from caterpillar to butterfly - reflects growth and change, inspiring us to embrace life’s fleeting moments. Across cultures, butterflies are seen as messengers of joy and symbols of the soul’s eternal nature, with deep spiritual and emotional connections.

The butterfly represents the idea that small actions can lead to significant outcomes, as seen in the "butterfly effect" in chaos theory. This reminds us of the interconnectedness of all things and the power of minor changes to create a broader impact.

Join us in creating a butterfly collage from single-use plastic to highlight the urgent issue of plastic pollution and express hope for the future transformation of our country. Pin your butterfly onto a map of the U.S. to symbolize collective action and progress. Materials will be provided on-site, but you’re welcome to bring soft plastic film packaging to share. Use the provided templates or invent your own design to contribute to this shared vision of change.

Mother Creatrix Collective:

"Gathering Threads of Care" A Collaborative Beginning.
The Mother Creatrix Collective's collaborative workshop transforms donated bed sheets—each carrying intimate histories of comfort and healing—into strips through a meditative, communal labor that mirrors traditional practices of material repurposing. This preparatory ritual becomes a foundation for building community support networks, as participants share knowledge, guidance, and stories while working together with focused intention. The strips serve as both tangible materials and symbolic beginnings of wider circles of connection, contributing to the Bed Sheet Crochet Circle planned for 2026 at The Old Stone House in Brooklyn. Through this intentional gathering and transformation of everyday materials, the project illuminates how support networks naturally emerge from small acts of sharing, creating an expanding tapestry of community care and shared purpose.
